Product Description

Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) Pyrolytic Graphite Disc

Pyrolytic Graphite

Pyrolytic graphite is a new carbon material, is produced with high purity hydrocarbon gas in a certain furnace pressure, in 1800 ºC ~ 2000 ºC on the graphite substrate by chemical vapor deposition of the higher crystalline orientation, which has a high density (2.20g / cm), high purity (impurity content (0.0002%) and thermal, electrical, magnetic and mechanical properties of anisotropy, while still maintaining a vacuum of 10mmHg at 1800 ºC.

Generally, carbon deposited above 1800 ºC is called pyrolytic graphite, while carbon deposited below this temperature is called pyrolytic carbon.

Pyrolytic Graphite Structure

Pyrolytic graphite consists of layers of wavy, twisted plans composed of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal structure. These layers are mutually parallel to each other but rotated randomly around an axis perpendicular to the deposition plan(c axis). The layered structure, with strong intra-layer covalent bonds and weak electrostatic bonds(Van der Waals bonding) between the layers, leads to a high degree of anisotropy in all properties.

Features of pyrolytic graphite:

High temperature resistance: Pyrolytic graphite can work stably in high temperature environments and has a wide range of operating temperatures. It can be used in vacuum environments or under the protection of inert gases at temperatures up to 3600 ºC.

Corrosion resistance and wear resistance: Pyrolytic graphite has good resistance to acid and alkali corrosion, and excellent wear resistance, allowing it to maintain stable performance in certain harsh environments.

Highly anisotropic: The structure and properties of pyrolytic graphite shows significant differences in different directions. The thermal conductivity along the parallel plane direction is comparable to that of copper, while in the vertical plane direction it is similar to ceramics and belongs to thermal insulation. Meanwhile, its resistivity differs by thousands of times in two directions.

High purity: The purity of pyrolytic graphite is very high, which makes it widely used in some fields that require extremely high material purity.

Excellent electrical and thermal conductivity: Pyrolytic graphite has excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, especially along the parallel plane direction, with outstanding thermal conductivity.

Magnetically, pyrolytic graphite is a great diamagnetic material at room temperature. Magnetic Levitation is a phenomenon that can be implemented using materials with high diamagnetic properties. This material is a suitable option for magnetic levitation due to its high diamagnetic properties.
Applications
  • Used in the rocket industry as a strong heating and cooling conductor
  • Used in nuclear reactors as a neutron modulator coating
  • Used in electronic devices as Heat sink
  • Used in the construction of grid structures in some high power vacuum lamps
  • Used in the automotive industry to create a certain amount of friction between two parts
  • Used in medical engineering industries, for example in the manufacture of artificial hearts, heart valves and artificial vessels due to the lack of rapid blood clot formation

Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) Pyrolytic Graphite Disc
Pyrolytic graphite sheets have found applications where heat conductivity and thermal treatment involve. Particularly, there are two main areas where pyrolytic graphite sheets are employed namely thermal transfer and thermal interface. They are efficient and useful in developing tools and equipment that are applied where the temperature controlling process has to be performed in an isolated packaging because of downsizing and that the package has to be lightweight.

In fact, pyrolytic graphite has turned out to be a practical and ideal solution where the generated heat sources are integrated circuits (IC) such as processor, power amplifiers, CPUs, laptop computers, etc. pyrolytic graphite sheets are widely used in lighting, telecommunications, power conversion and between semiconductors, magnetic components and heat sinks that a lot of heat is generated. They are suitable for products with small sizes like wearable devices, smart phones, 3C electronic supplies and displays. The electronic components where pyrolytic graphite sheets are applied are LED back light, screens, autopilot systems, DDR module, electric vehicles, computer mother board, power supply, wireless hubs and routers.

Conclusion

Pyrolytic graphite sheets attract a lot of attention because of their remarkable electrical and thermal conductivity in transmitting the heat generated by many electrical and electronic devices and machines.

Pyrolytic graphite is divided into two types: highly oriented and ordinary. Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) is a new type of graphite material that has undergone high-temperature treatment and has properties similar to single crystal graphite.

We can produce pyrolytic graphite in both of PG grade and HOPG grade with stable and reliable quality.
